Sierpinski Christmas Tree

Jan 10, 2013 05:36 PM
Fractal geometric pyramid model made of green and white triangular shapes.

This three dimensional Sierpinski tetrahedral structure was created with a lot of help from my Year 10, 12 and 13 classes.

Fractal triangle sculpture made of green and white triangular pieces.

It is inspired by the Sierpinski triangle fractal.

Our challenge was to take this design into three dimensions and create a fractal Christmas tree. We started with regular tetrahedrons constructed with a pair of compasses and a straight edge. In just an hour the girls managed to create one and a half level 4 fractals each containing 4^3 = 64 tetrahedrons. They worked really hard and I promised them that somehow I'd get up to the next level of fractal, which has a total of 256 tetrahedrons in it. My Year 12s and 13s helped out and the structure is now complete.

It is topped off with a pyramid-like structure consisting of three Von Koch Snowflakes taped together.

Below is a link to an explanation of how we created it...
