Forum Thread: When do you use mathematical formulas for your artwork

I'm a noob to this so I apologize for the ignorance. 

I've noticed that drawing simple things that are mathematically inspired like Snake knots , Julia sets , Escher's work on hyperbolic planes or even folding origami don't require the specialized knowledge of math. 

What mathematical objects require formulas for their composition? A broad example would be appreciated.
